2026 POZZOLANA TRASS

Short History

Trass is a natural pozzolana, that comes from metamorphic rock and is generally used as a binding agent, in particular our Rhine Trass originating from past volcanic activity in the Eifel zone. Trass or natural pozzolana was first used by the Romans to produce a sort of quick-setting cement called ”opus coementicium”, able to set even under water and lasting an extraordinarily long time. The use of this material allowed for the construction of great domes as the quick setting made the construction of the arch frames simple. Unfortunately this technique was lost, rendering many constructions impossible until Brunelleschi resolved the problem by other means. Only in the late Renaissasnce was its use rediscovered.
TRASS – An Ideal binding agent

Trass on its own does not harden but in combination with lime or cement allows one to obtain mortar with very high-tech features.

TRASS – Why?

Its use is particularly convenient when types of mortar and concrete with high levels of cohesion and homogeneity are sought and uniform brick skin surfaces are to be achieved. Pozzolana gives greater elasticity and plasticity as wel as greater chemical and mechanical resistance:

1) It prevents the formation of efflorescences and leaching (saltpetres);

2) It improves the the impermeability against water seepage;

3) It intervenes actively in the setting phase and gives a subsequent and increased hardening;

4) It has no negative effect on the anticorrosive protection of the metal framework;

5) It is an absolutely natural material, compatable with Bio-building standards.
